GLFC chillers are suitable for process applications, such as data center cooling or machine cooling. Compared to standard chillers, free-cooling units are equipped with an additional air-cooled heat exchanger. The additional heat exchanger is flown through by water-glycol mixture from the system when the internal waterways are switched. The water-glycol mixture is cooled or pre-cooled by the outside air. If the outside air temperature drops about 1 K below the return water temperature of the chilled water system, the free cooling function is activated. Free cooling and mechanical refrigeration take place simultaneously during the transitional period to achieve maximum efficiency. If the outside temperatures are sufficiently cold, the complete cooling capacity can be achieved by free cooling. The compressors remain switched off. Only the fans remain in operation. With the free-cooling function, it is possible to ensure excellent energy efficiency over the course of the year.
